Major Duties include, but are not limited to:
Clinical Functions:
Performs occupational therapy evaluation and treatments primarily with patients, male and female, ages ranging from adult to geriatric, having a variety of disabilities.
These cases may be relatively complex in nature with chronic and acute disease entities including but not limited to central nervous system disorders, joint diseases, soft tissue disorders, circulatory and pulmonary diseases, diabetes mellitus, altered thought processes and multisystem disease combinations.
Uses standard and nonstandard methods for evaluating issues within the home environment to identify potential problems and a baseline level of function.
Appropriately completes home accessibility and safety assessments.
Makes recommendations to improve safety and accessibility as needed.
Assesses appropriateness of DME and other ADL equipment already in the patient's residence.
Determines need for additional DME and ADL equipment to appropriately meet the needs of the patient.
Based on evaluation results develops an effective and efficient treatment plan as needed.
Appropriately recommends referral to outside therapy sources when indicated.
Regularly refers patients to physicians and other PM&RS team members providing information regarding performance, current status, and additional need for services outside of occupational therapy.
Completes patient and/or family training as indicated.
Practices appropriate infection control procedures, personal safety, patient safety, patient privacy and treatment precautions pertinent to patient's condition or disease process and the location of patient encounter.
Appropriately follows guidelines and safety measures in completing home visits and associated travel.
Initiates prosthetic request for all recommended equipment and devices.
Communicates functional abilities and barriers of patients during their OT evaluation and any recommendations to the HISA Committee, home improvement and structural alterations program.
Documents results of evaluations, patient treatment including patient/family education, and patient's response to treatment in accordance to current policy and practice standards.
Refers patients for community resources as needed.
Has ability to determine the most appropriate durable medical equipment items needed relative to the patient's diagnosis, age, and abilities.
Serves as clinical instructor for Level I and Level II OT and OTA students.
Serves as a Mentor to others on the occupational therapy staff.
Encourages and instructs family members in participation and adapts equipment and procedures to safely engage the patient in completing activities of daily living (ADLs) and Instrumental ADLs (IADLs) as independently and as safely as possible.
Performs and interprets results of tests and measurements for use in preparing for modification and/or evaluation of patient's needs, making recommendations based on current status and potential changes in patient's condition.
Evaluates patient's needs with respect to prescribed braces, orthotics and durable medical equipment, medically appropriate for activities of daily living and upper extremity support.
Supervises occupational therapy students as assigned.
The therapist assigned will be responsible to provide occupational therapy coverage based on operational needs as defined by the supervisor and the chief of PM&RS.
Administrative Functions: Receives patient referrals from appropriate consult sources and prioritizes patients for evaluation and treatment in a timely fashion.
Reviews charts to assess appropriateness of the referrals and possible contraindications for treatment.
Participates in all required department meetings, assigned committees, and with all policies and procedures as applicable and assigned.
Schedules patients for assessment, considering priority and coordinates schedules with OT Supervisor to ensure proper staffing/clinic measures/coverages remain sufficient.
Documents performance provides timely treatment, and achievement of treatment goals, assuring a high level of productivity and cost-effective treatments.
Assures all documentation is done timely on all patient visits according to established facility policies.

Foreign Graduates: Graduates of foreign occupational therapy programs meet the requirements, if they have a current, full, active and unrestricted license.
Certification: Candidates must possess a current NBCOT certification as an OT.
State Licensure: Candidates must possess a full, current, and unrestricted state license, to practice occupational therapy in a state, territory or Commonwealth of the United States (i.
e.
, Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia.
Exceptions for the Graduate Occupational Therapist (1) OT graduates from an approved occupational therapy program who otherwise meet the minimum qualification requirements, but who do not possess NBCOT certification and/or state licensure, may be appointed, pending certification and/or licensure, as a graduate OT on a full-time temporary appointment not-to-exceed two years under the authority of 38 U.

(2) Graduate OTs may only be appointed at the GS-9 grade level and may not be promoted/converted to the GS-11 level until licensure and/or certification is obtained.
For grades levels at or above the developmental GS-11 grade level, the OT must be certified and licensed.
(3) A graduate OT may provide care only under the direct supervision of a licensed OT who meets all state regulatory requirements.
(4) Temporary graduate OT appointments may not be extended beyond two years, or converted to a new temporary appointment.

Knowledge of applicable regulations governing documentation, reimbursement and workload entry in accordance with established professional practice.
GS-12: Education, Experience, and Licensure: Completion of one year of experience equivalent to at the GS-11 grade level and directly related to the position being filled.
Demonstrated KSAs: In addition to the [experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Knowledge of occupational therapy principles and techniques consistent with current clinical standards based on OT theory and evidence based practice.
Knowledge is inclusive of physical, occupational, cognitive, and psychosocial functional deficits.
Ability to collaborate and communicate orally and in writing with all internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to use critical analysis, clinical reasoning, and creativity to independently solve complex problems related to adapting and modifying assessments, treatment plans, activities and procedures to meet the needs of patients.
Skill in procuring, fabricating, adjusting, adapting, and modifying orthoses, splints, and adaptive equipment for activities of daily living (inclusive of durable medical equipment).
(e) Ability to conduct OT related in-service and clinical training.
Preferred Experience: Completes complex and varied evaluations serving as the subject matter expert and as a consultant in the completion of environmental home assessments to include durable medical equipment needs and recommendations/strategies to overcome barriers.
Serves as a subject matter expert in the field of occupational therapy in completing aging in place assessments.
Has extensive knowledge in providing recommendations for durable medical and adaptive equipment/strategies in serving patients with multiple co-morbidities.

Preferred Experience: Completes complex and varied evaluations serving as the subject matter expert and as a consultant in the completion of environmental home assessments to include durable medical equipment needs and recommendations/strategies to overcome barriers.
Serves as a subject matter expert in the field of occupational therapy in completing aging in place assessments.
Has extensive knowledge in providing recommendations for durable medical and adaptive equipment/strategies in serving patients with multiple co-morbidities.
